Back Pain And Poor Posture

As we age, settle into work routines, or start a new exercise program, back care becomes increasingly important. That’s where postural awareness for back pain prevention comes into play. Postural awareness, or knowing how to position your body for optimal movement, can result in reduced back pain from poor posture.

Common Postural Habits

Slouching

  • Whether sitting at a desk or lounging on the couch, which places undue pressure on the lower back.

Forward Head Posture

  • Also known as “craning the neck,” this involves jutting the head forward when using computers or mobile devices, resulting in a condition known as “tech neck,” which strains the upper spine.

Improper lifting techniques

  • Activities such as bending at the waist instead of the knees can cause significant back strain.

Swayback

  • This is where the pelvis is tilted forward, pushing the hips and stomach forward while the upper body leans back, causing an exaggerated curve in the lower back.

Addressing these common postural mistakes can significantly reduce the risk of developing back pain from poor posture. We recommend that our patients alternate between static (body alignment while inactive) and dynamic (body position while active) posture.

Finding your optimal posture and being aware of it throughout the day can help ease pressure on your spine and relieve tension.

Finding Postural Awareness On The Job and In The Kitchen

A chef in his late 30s had been experiencing nagging lower back pain for months. The demands of his job, which involved long hours on his feet, heavy lifting, and repetitive movements, had taken a toll on his body. At his initial assessment in our clinic, it was clear that his back pain was a result of a combination of factors, including poor posture, muscle imbalances, and overuse.

We created a comprehensive plan using a combination of postural corrections to prevent and relieve back pain. He was instructed on proper body mechanics for lifting and carrying heavy objects and exercises to strengthen his core which helped him to maintain his ideal posture.

Over time, he began to notice a significant improvement in his back pain. By implementing the recommended changes and practicing proper body mechanics, he was able to reduce strain on his back and improve his overall comfort.
